TMJ Disorders

Service Tmj MainIn our facility located in La Cañada Flintridge, our staff is trained and experienced in treating patients who suffer from TMJ Disorder.

TMJ stands for a “temporomandibular” joint which is the name of the right and left joints that connect your jaw to your skull, but the term “TMJ” is used to describe a condition that involves a strain and deficiency within the muscles of the jaw and neck. TMJ Disorder can lead to more severe conditions; therefore, early detection and treatments are vital. If you feel pain in your jaw or you hear a “clicking” sound when you open and close your mouth, you may be suffering from TMJ. Fortunately, the disorder is easily diagnosed and easier to treat today than in the past. TMJ Disorder happens when the joints of the jaw and the chewing muscles stop working correctly together.

As a dental facility trained to treat TMJ Disorder, the doctor will recommend starting with the least invasive procedure. Once the doctor diagnoses your condition, the next step is to discuss the form of treatment that will provide you with the best relief. It is important to understand that no one particular treatment can completely heal this condition; however, some treatments can help alleviate the pain and discomfort.

One option is a unique mold custom-made to create a bite guard to stop you from grinding your teeth at night. The night guard is made of clear plastic that covers your upper and lower teeth, similar to a full retainer. The difference is that the lower and upper portion of the guard is attached, which will prevent your teeth from touching and the jaw from clenching. Many patients report feeling better almost immediately. Another option the doctor has is to change the shape of your teeth and correct your bite completely, often called “realignment,” which alleviates TMJ symptoms and improves the aesthetic appearance of your teeth as well.
